چکیده

Recently, a new technology for stably levitating and controlling the position and orientation of a rigid body has been introduced. A unique feature is the use of Lorentz forces rather than the usual Maxwell forces as in magnetic bearings. The Lorentz force approach, which uses the force experienced by a conductor in a magnetic eld, is seen to have several advantages. After an initial exploration phase and period of feasibility study, a number of potentially important applications are emerging. Among them are a way to provide ne compliant motion for assembly, to provide high delity force/torque feedback for teleoperation and virtual reality haptic interfaces, and to isolate sensitive payloads from environmental vibrational disturbances, either in space or on earth. In this paper we will discuss recent work intended to demonstrate the e cacy of Lorentz levitation technology for these application areas.

Using Magnetic Levitation for Haptic Interaction

Magnetic levitation as a means of motion and force/torque control can provide many advantages for high-fidelity haptic interaction, as compared to motorized linkage and cable actuation. Impedance-based haptic interface devices function both as force display devices, generating forces and/or torques to be felt by the user, and as input devices, sensing the motions imparted by the user to the dev...

A coarse-fine approach to force-reflecting hand controller design

A coarse-fine approach to the design of high fidelity haptic interfaces is proposed based on prior work and new psychophysics studies. The approach involves a fine-motion six-degree-of-freedom parallel Lorentz actuator mounted on a series/parallel coarse-motion stage and coupled through a compliant transmission. The frequency response of a simplified model is used to illustrate the advantages o...

Force Reflecting Micro - Teleoperation with Haptic Feedback 1

Traditional force reflecting teleoperation focuses on master and slave systems that have approximately the same workspace volume. This paper addresses force reflecting teleoperation in which the workspace of the master is many orders of magnitude greater than the workspace of the slave. In addition, the forces experienced in the remote environment are one to two order of magnitude below human t...

Haptic teleoperation using Impedance Control with Application in Homecare Robotics

This paper presents an approach of teleoperation using impedance control for both master and slave manipulators. The 4-channel architecture with impedance control ensures enhanced transparency by appropriately controlling the dynamic behavior between motion and applied forces in the task space of the manipulators on both sides. Performance of the system is improved by using on-line estimation o...
